They say it takes a village to raise a child. Well, it also takes one to put on a triathlon!

Location: Spray Lake Sawmill Family Sports Centre 

(800 Griffin Rd E, Cochrane, AB T4C 2B8)

Time: depends on the shift you signed up for

Parking: there is ample parking in the parking lot right at the recreation centre.  

What to bring: comfy clothes, indoor shoes and a water bottle. If you want to dress in any bright, fun colors or costumes we welcome it! This triathlon is a fun event and any extra energy you can bring to it is welcome. We will have coffee from Cochrane Coffee Traders and snacks for you when you arrive!

 

Here is a list of positions that you have signed up with your responsibilities for the day. Rise Up staff will be on site the day of and ensure everyone is comfortable with their roles. There are 8 heats of 16 women so you will be a pro after Heat #1!

 

Take a read through the other positions in your area to see how everyone's role applies in moving the participants through your area. 

Athlete Check-In/Body Marking - you will be at a table in the lobby. You will mark off each woman as they arrive on the heat sheet to confirm they have arrived, body mark them with their race number on their LEFT arm and their name on their RIGHT arm, as well as their race number on their RIGHT leg. You will then direct them to their heat leader.

 

Heat Leaders - the heat leaders will help the women move through the facility during their event. Don't worry if you do not know that facility, we will orient you when you get there. 

 

30 minutes prior to the heat starting: 

You will greet the 16 women in the lobby at check in (ensuring they are all present), ensure they body marked, and ensure they are ready and excited to go.

 

20 minutes prior to the heat starting: 

You will direct them into the FAMILY CHANGE ROOM (which will be closed off for our event participants only) and have them put anything they do not need for the event in their locker. You will then meet them on deck and ensure they have:

-goggles

-OPTIONAL: swim cap

-MANDATORY: towel

-any extra clothes they are putting on

-running shoes 

-OPTIONAL: cycling shoes

 

10 minutes prior to the heat starting:

You will direct them into the bleachers to place their things there and then to meet the swim marshal who will organize them into their lanes (you will have a check in sheet to ensure all women have made it on deck). 

 

During the Triathlon:

You will communicate with the swim captain when the start of the heat will begin. Once the swim has started, you can cheer and encourage the athletes. 

After the swim is over you can have each athlete ask their lap counter how many laps they completed so they can tell you and you can mark it down on their finisher's certificates. 

Ensure all women get to transition and know where to go to make their way to the spin room. Again you will have a check in sheet, this time to ensure all women have made it to the spin room. 

You will communicate with the bike captain (who will be a facility staff member) when the start of the bike will be. Once the bike has started, you can cheer and encourage the athletes. 

After the bike is over you will have all of the athletes take a look at the distance on their bike computers, as they exit the room they can tell you how far they rode and you can mark it down on their finisher's certificates. Ensure all women know where to go to make their way to the track. Again you will have a check in sheet, this time to ensure all women have made it to the track. 

You will communicate with the run captain as to when the start the run will be. 

Once the run has started, you can cheer and encourage the athletes. 

After the run is over you will have all of the athletes ask their lap counter how many laps they completed so they can tell you and you can mark it down on their finisher's certificates. 

 

Post race:

They did it! You will walk the women back down to the lobby where they will go to the food table and get some food and drink. You will then meet with your group to hand out the finisher's certificates and the finisher's bracelets. You will then ask myself or Rose to take a group photo of  your group before everyone leaves to commemorate! 

Swim Captain - collect the lap counting sheets from the heat leader and distribute to the lap counters. Communicate with the heat leader on time to start, and officiate the 10 minutes in the pool. Help clear the pool as quickly as possible and ensure the women are directed to the bleachers (transition).

 

Swim Marshal - line up each heat and determine who will be in which lanes together based off projected time. Direct women to what lanes they will be in. 2 will start at one end and 2 at the other (lap counters will mark off -1 for each of the women starting at the opposite end)

 

Swim Lap Counters - each lap counter will be responsible for 4 women. You will mark each lap on the lap counting sheets each time a participant touches the wall at your end of the pool.  2 women will start at one end of the pool and 2 at the other (you will mark off -1 for each of the women starting at the opposite end). Write down the laps completed on each participants finisher sheets that the heat leader will give you and then collect back. 

 

Bike Support - you will be helping the women get on their bikes and get them properly set up to ride comfortably and efficiently. The Spray Lakes staff will be in charge of the time but you will play an important role in walking around during the ride to ensure the riders are still OK on their bikes, maximizing the ride (do they have enough or too much tension), cheering and motivating, and helping the heat leader collect the distances rode by each participant when the 20 minutes is up. 

 

Run Captain - collect the lap counting sheets from the heat leader and distribute to the lap counters. Communicate with the heat leader and officiate the 15 minutes on the track, and ensure the track is running smoothy with any facility members also using the track. You will direct runners into the outer 2 lanes and the walkers into the inner lane. 

 

Run Lap Counters - each lap counter will be responsible for 4 women. You will mark each lap on lap counting sheets each time they pass you on the track. 

 

Food Table - this lovely team will ensure each racer gets a Happy Belly Kombucha and the snacks provided post race.
